Black Ops II is the first game in the series to feature futuristic warfare technology and the first to present branching storylines driven by player choice as well as selecting weapons before starting story mode missions. ĭevelopment for the game began soon after the release of Black Ops, with Activision promising that the follow-up would bring "meaningful innovation" to the Call of Duty franchise. The campaign features nonlinear gameplay and has multiple endings. Both time periods involve the characters pursuing Raul Menendez, a Nicaraguan cartel leader, who is responsible for kidnapping Woods in the 80s and later sparking a second Cold War in 2025. In the 1980s, the player switches control between Alex Mason and Frank Woods, two of the protagonists from Black Ops, while in 2025, the player assumes control of Mason's son, David ( codenamed "Section"). The game's campaign follows up the story of Black Ops and is set in the late 1980s and 2025. A corresponding game for the PlayStation Vita, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified, was developed by nStigate Games and also released on November 13. Black Ops II is the ninth game in the Call of Duty franchise of video games, a sequel to the 2010 game Call of Duty: Black Ops and the first Call of Duty game for the Wii U. Fortunately he has no interest in playing Zombies, so I don't have to make that decision yet.Ĭall of Duty: Black Ops 2 is available at Amazon and Gamestop for about $60.Call of Duty: Black Ops II is a 2012 first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. I have not decided yet if I'll allow him to play the campaign mode, but if I do it will definitely be on the less-violent setting, and we will be talking about it. I'm planning to let my son play multiplayer with me, but only in party chat, and only with friends that I know well. The intense scenes could cause some nightmares for younger teens and I would really recommend turning the less-violent setting on. Probably, if you think they are old enough to handle it. If you aren't convinced by that, then you may want to take a pass, or wait for a full review of the game. If you're also a fan of sci-fi movies, or future-tech books, then definitely you'll like it. If you have a strong stomach (or opt out of the violence setting) and you're a fan of the other COD titles, then yes, I think you'll like it. I leveled up far enough the first night to see how it works, but I have not yet formed an opinion. Weapons must be unlocked using unlock tokens, and then used in game to unlock attachments. Also like each previous title, there have been some changes to the game mechanics, mostly dealing with weapons upgrades and perks. Like all previous titles, this is where most of the players will spend their time. Following in the steps of other Call of Duty titles, Black Ops 2 offers multiple types of game play. Most notable are weapons targeting systems that highlight enemies, millimeter scanning scopes that can see through walls and rocks, and autonomous drones. Weapons, at least for the future missions, have some high tech features. The overall feel of the game is similar to the first story, but at times feels oddly sci-fi. The same applies for multiplayer lobbies, though in my experience it is the younger players who are cussing and throwing insults the most. ![]() The f-bomb is dropped in almost every scene and the few scenes that omit it more than make it up with other words and sexual slurs. There are very few exchanges that don't include multiple profanities. Like violence and gore, the profanity level is pegged at maximum. It fits well in the story and is not gratuitous, but I feel they could have scaled the gore back a little. A knife is jabbed into the subject's hand and twisted, and he is later executed. I didn't feel that the torture scene is as disturbing as it was throughout the first story, but it was shocking.
